This daytrip is an opportunity to dive deep into the core of Morocco. Taza holds the largest subterranean cave in North Africa, the Friouato Cave. At an already appointed time, our driver will pick you up from your accommodation in Fez. Then, we will begin our thrilling day discovering Taza and the Friouato Cave. It is situated in a historically strategic location between the Rif and Middle Atlas Mountains. Thus, Taza Gap was a battlefield between the eastern invaders trying to enter Morocco’s heartland. Since the fortification of the town of Taza in the 11th century, it enjoyed a rich urban and military prosperity. We will wonder in its old town winding streets and alleys. Then, we will visit many other sights, such as the Bab Jemaa gate, the covered Moulwalb market. The mighty barbican fortifications will give us a glimpse of the civilization that reigned for centuries and protected the old town from rebellious tribes. Lunch will be in a local restaurant. Our journey will take us 30km south of Taza into the outskirts of the Middle Atlas Mountains. The incredible natural beauty of the Friouato Cave is stunning. With an explored depth of 272 meters, the Friouato Cave reigns as the deepest and most cavernous cave in North Africa. Its real limits remain unknown. Depending on your interests, there are two ways to discover the Friouato Cave. First, you may go down the iron stairway to discover the picturesque cave opening and then come back up. Alternatively, for those more ambitious souls, you may hire a professional guide and spelunking equipment and actually go into the depths of the cave to marvel at its many different rock formations. Lastly, we will take a drive around the Taza National Park to discover the area surrounding the Tazekka Mountain (1980m), before heading back to your accommodations in Fez.
